What is Data Communication Network Plan and Design?

In Telecommunication the Data Communication Network is a dedicated network used for providing connectivity between network elements and their respective operations supports system(OSS's).

What is DCN Function?

  • DCN Primary function is enabling the surveillance and the status of a Telecom.
  • DCN also facilitates network operations and management such as provisioning,billing,planning and services assurance.
  • DCN Provides support and assurance to operations of the telecom management through providing compatible communication at layer-3

    DCN Architecture:-



    DCN Includes two types of communication network





1.ECN-embedded communication network


ECN is an in-band network based on the network elements for the network  data communication between NEs.


2.Ext-DCN Network


Ext-DCN(External Data communication network). normally is an out-of-band network based on the configuration of telecommunication facilities for the purpose of transmitting network management data.


ECN message Transportation:

  • Management Message Transportation.
  • Control Plane Message Transportation.

ECN Technology Overview:-

i.Network layer and above

  • layer 3 IP routing function.
  • IP only network.
------Route Protocol:-
  • OSPF
------Static Route.

ii.Data Link layer

  • Ethernet MAC

iii. Physical Layer

  • LAN,SDH/WAN
  • Ethernet FE/GE/10G

Types of ECN Access Mode:-

  • Access Mode L2 Network through L2 or directly.
  • Access Mode L3 Network through L3 network.

Three Types of OSPF Areas:-

i.Common Area

  • Backbone Area.
  • Non-Backbone Area.
ii. Stub Area.
iii. NSSA .

Router Role in ECN:

  • Internal router.
  • ABR.
  • ASBR.

Types of LSA:-

  1. Route-LSA.
  2. Network-LSA.
  3. Network Summary LSA.
  4. ABSR summary LSA.
  5. AS-extend LSA.
  6. NSSA external LSA.

ECN Route Protocol:-

OSPF Cost is associated with the output side of each router interface
  • One methods to assign OSPF metric manually setting overrride the calculated interface cost.
  • The lowest the cost the more likely the interface is to be used to forward data traffic.
OSPF Cost are also associated with the externally derived routing data two types of external metrics supported.

ECN Route Protocol -Route Aggregation

  • Implemented on ABR.
  • ABR Summarize non-backbone  route  to backbone area for saving an internal resource of each NEs to guarantee total connectivity.
  • The cost of the summarized routes  is the maximum of the cost set to the component.

ECN is divided into multiple OSPF Areas :

  • Areas 0.
  • Areas 1.
  • Areas 2. and so on.

ECN Design Principles:-

minimize CPU loading of each NEs.

  • LSDB
  • number, routing table
  • Topology change
  • Area design

minimize memory uases.

  • LSDB
  • Routing Fabric

minimize ECN Bandwidth

Between Sub-network and ext-DCN  network routing information are interchaged by Static routing redistribution through GNE.
